François Couperin's 'Leçons de Ténèbres' (c. 1713-17), a setting of the Lamentations of Jeremiah, fused devotional expression with a dramatic performing style embodied here by sopranos Lucy Crowe and Elizabeth Watts. Two Trio Sonatas and a 'Stabat Mater' by Sébastien de Brossard round out this luminous programme. La Nuova Musica was founded by its artistic director David Bates in 2007 whilst in residency at Snape Maltings and was hailed by BBC Radio 3 as one of the most exciting consorts in the early music field

For his Leçons des ténèbres, a setting of the Lamentations of Jeremiah, ''Couperin le Grand'' fused devotional expression with a dramatic performing style embodied here perfectly by sopranos Lucy Crowe and Elizabeth Watts. Two Trio Sonatas and a Stabat Mater by Sébastien de Brossard round out this luminous program. Performer: Lucy Crowe, Elizabeth Watts. Orchestra: La Nuova Musica. Conductor: David Bates. Composer: Francois Couperin. Audio CD (September 9, 2016).

His Stabat Mater is not a terribly common item, and in the performance here by La Nuova Musica under David Bates it makes a strong balance for François Couperin's Leçons de Ténèbres, or Tenebrae Lessons, in two ways: not only because it is Italianate, but also because it is done here in the grand choir style. David Bates, La Nuova Musica.

Bates/Crowe/Watts (Harmonia Mundi). Two of the UK’s finest early music voices divvy up Les Leçons de Ténèbres – outrageously sensual liturgical lamentations written by François Couperin for Holy Week in 1714. In the first lesson, Lucy Crowe is ecstatic and golden, ravishing in her upper flourishes and the way she pushes and lingers on those achy-sweet dissonances. In the second lesson, Elizabeth Watts is grainier, softer-edged, earthier. Watch a performance of Couperin’s Jerusalem by Lucy Crow, Liz Watts and La Nuova Musica on Vimeo. 3) Leçons de ténèbres. François Couperin Composer. Elizabeth Watts (sop). David Bates Conductor. Sébastien de Brossard Composer. La Nuova Musica, anticipating the 2017 Lenten season, have coupled lamentations by two turn-of-the-century (17th to 18th) French composers – one an amateur, the other highly professional, both ardent admirers of the Italian style.

Last played on. Afternoon Concert. Second Lecon de tenebres. La Nuova Musica, David Bates & Brossard. Sonate en trio, SDB221. 30/img/track fallback.
