Rhapsody in Blue is a 1924 musical composition by the American composer George Gershwin for solo piano and jazz band, which combines elements of classical music with jazz-influenced effects. The composition was commissioned by the bandleader Paul Whiteman. It was orchestrated by Ferde Grofé several times, including the original 1924 scoring, the 1926 "theater orchestra" setting, and the 1942 symphony orchestra scoring, though completed earlier

George Gershwin is an American legend and represents the first not-so-secret passageway between jazz and classical worlds. His songs and Porgy and Bess are clearly influenced by the jazz idiom but stand on the popular music side of the passageway. The Three Preludes for Piano, Rhapsody in Blue, and An American in Paris ARE the passageway, and this disc presents the latter two in performances by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra on this splendid Telarc disc from 1981. Rhapsody in Blue is one of Gershwin’s signature compositions

In many ways Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin were very similar: both were great showmen, at ease with different kinds of music, and both were superb performers. On this essential recording, Bernstein the pianist gives a winningly loose-limbed performance of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and conducts a near-ideal An American in Paris. Bernstein’s own Symphonic Dances from West Side Story sizzle, and his searing film score about life on the New Jersey docks, On the Waterfront, just oozes atmosphere and angst. Thanks to Sony, its Great Performances series now includes a classic that many will remember vividly - due in great part to its iconic cover photograph - and which some will recall fondly as their first introduction to Gershwin’s entertaining work. Paired with his buoyant 1958 performance of An American in Paris with the New York Philharmonic, Bernstein's rendition of Rhapsody is lively, flashy, bluesy, and intensely romantic in feeling, and these positive characteristics no doubt contributed to keeping this album in print for many years as one of Columbia's great successes.

New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Columbia Symphony Orchestra Leonard Bernstein – conductor. The performance by Bernstein and both the Columbia Symphonic and the NY Philharmonic on the pieces is simply breathtaking. Rhapsody In Blue, the first "serious" composition by George Gershwin (1898-1937), is likely to remain his most popular work in any form, more for its prodigious melodic richness rather than for any deeper expressiveness or structural brilliance. In the hands of another composer, Rhapsody In Blue could easily have turned into a disjointed exercise in symphonically dressed up jazz rhythms, melodic figures and quasi-improvisatory instrumental licks.
