The individual who posed on the album cover with a big grin across his face, clad in a red blazer with his arms encircling a globular model of the earth, was Billy Moeller, a singer who performed under the name of Coby Wells when he wasn't appearing on television and throughout the international media as Whistling Jack Smith. Whether Moeller/Wells actually whistled on any of these records is open to conjecture. As minions of Noel Walker and his Whistling Jack Smith project, the Sammes Singers whistled, hummed, and even dutifully chortled the words to "The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Unless it was Walker himself, the narrator and vocalist on "Waltzing Matilda" might actually be Moeller/Wells, who coincidentally did eventually settle in Australia.

Exhibit A: I Was Kaiser Bill’s Batman, by Whistling Jack Smith. shortly before starting its ascent in the States. It’s not one of the most memorable songs of the ’60s, to say the least, but it does have a curious backstory. I Was Kaiser Bill’s Batman started life as a ditty called Too Much Birdseed. A giddy little number, it was written by Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway, who’d already given us the sublime You’ve Got Your Troubles by the Fortunes and Green Grass by Gary Lewis and the Playboys (they would later co-pen the Hollies’ Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress, among other hits).

Whistling Jack Smith war das Pseudonym des englischen Sängers Billy Moeller ( 2. Februar 1946 in Liverpool).
