Guernica shows the tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon individuals, particularly innocent civilians. This work has gained a monumental status, becoming a perpetual reminder of the tragedies of war, an anti-war symbol, and an embodiment of peace. On completion Guernica was displayed around the world in a brief tour, becoming famous and widely acclaimed. This tour helped bring the Spanish Civil War to the world's attention. This work is seen as an amalgmation of pastoral and epic styles.

Guernica (Spanish/Basque: Gernika) is a 2016 Spanish-American war romance drama film directed by Koldo Serra, starring James D'Arcy, María Valverde and Jack Davenport. It is the first feature film made about the 1937 bombing of Guernica. The film centres on an American journalist (D'Arcy) covering the Spanish Civil War and the bombing of Guernica who falls in love with a censor (Valverde) for the Spanish Republican government.

Pablo Picasso, Guernica, 1937 Photo: Joaquín Cortés/Román Lores. But that is just the material aspect of this masterpiece, and upon closer inspection, we discover an elaborate reflection of Spain during that time and, furthermore, of Europe during the troubled interwar period. Find out more about one of Picasso’s most powerful paintings of all times. The 1937 Paris International Exposition and the Spanish Civil War.

Guernica was Picasso's response to the bombing of the Basque town of the same name on April 26, 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. Picasso was commissioned by the republican government of Spain to produce a mural painting for the Spanish Pavilion at the World Fair in Paris. Painted in one month - from May to June 1937 - Guernica became the centerpiece of the Spanish pavilion and a sensation at the Fair, but it was consequently banned from exhibition in Spain until military dictator Franco fell from power in 1975
