Courses could have singlehandedly blown Woelv’s past discography out of the water; instead, for psychological rather than commercial reasons, Castrée is now Ô Paon. Darker, she says? Okay, sure. Here’s what sets Ô Paon apart from contemporaries: Castrée knows that not all repetition is created equal. Her voice loops for atmosphere, but it will also bushwhack a harrowing journey if it helps the narrative. You’d never mistake her for some faceless LCD-glazed loop-twiddler. Courses’ surgical centerpiece Aéroport/Évolution is its longest and boldest song. It’s one of the most affecting moments on the album. She’s still shaking when she spelunks back into the verse’s lower octave, and she should be: if the machines regurgitated a loop instead, Castrée the narrator would be elastic and unharmed. Woelv was tentative and fragile by design, but Ô Paon gives her weaknesses corners to peer around.
Chevaux - Ô Paon (Courses, 2010). That guitar part has been stuck in my head for a while now. As well as stuff from the latest album they played The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull, which I’m sure was slowed down, because I just listened to the album version and it almost sounded fas. urprisingly enough Tallahassee made an appearance, and sounded pretty damn different to the studio version! I don’t know that I would have fully recognised it had Dylan not introduced it beforehand. That was a nice touch too - he introduced all the tracks, which I wish more instrumental bands did, because I find the titles of instrumentals.
Main Course, released in 1975 for the RSO label, is the 13th album by the Bee Gees, and their last album to be released by Atlantic Records in the US under its distribution deal with Robert Stigwood. This album marked a change for the Bee Gees as it was their first album to include disco influenced songs, and it created the model for their output through the rest of the 1970s. It was the group's thirteenth album (eleventh worldwide).
Song: Sainte Patronne De Rien Pantoute. If you repeat a phrase or a sound long enough, it becomes a mantra or a fervent prayer. With that in mind, Courses is a looped liturgy for the apocalypse. Geneviéve Castrée sings in her native Quebecois-French, but offers English translations in the liner notes.
