The band's third album, Lost in the Dream, was released in 2014 following extensive touring and a period of loneliness and depression for primary songwriter Granduciel. The album was released to widespread critical acclaim and increased exposure. Previous collaborator Hall joined the band as its full-time drummer during the recording process, with saxophonist Natchez and additional guitarist LaMarca accompanying the band for its world tour. Granduciel and Vile began playing together as The War on Drugs in 2005. Regarding the band's name, Granduciel noted, "My friend Julian and I came up with it a few years ago over a couple bottles of red wine and a few typewriters when we were living in Oakland. We were writing a lot back then, working on a dictionary, and it just came out and we were like "hey, good band name" so eventually when I moved to Philadelphia and got a band together I used it.
Lost in the dream Or just the silence of a moment It’s always hard to tell Down in the way They cut it open and they sold it It’s always hard to tell. I saw a soldier man He locked his eyes like they were rings Ooh but it’s hard they can’t resist You may risk it all You’d risk it all for the memory But it’s living under your skin Love’s the key to the things that we see And don’t mind chasing Leave the light on in the. yard for me, oh. When we were the same We stroked our arms and we wore them thin Ah the sadness it was in But you don’t miss it man You got it all like a memory Now it’s living. That was one of the first songs I recorded on the album. I remember having that guitar, just a little thing, I sat down at night and put a drum machine on it. It’s funny, if you heard the drum machine, it was like a disco pattern.

Alexis Petridis recommends War on Drugs' third album, Lost in the Dream, a sprawling epic revolving around a deeply unconventional juxtaposition of styles. Combining experimental, hazy psychedelia and 80s rock, it manages to sound both expansive and claustrophobic - emotive and deeply enjoyable. Alexis Petridis, theguardian.
