Album · 1989 · 7 Songs. Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 5 in F, Op. 24 "Spring": IV. Rondo (Allegro ma non troppo). 9 in A, Op. 47 "Kreutzer". 5. 47 "Kreutzer": I. Adagio sostenuto - Presto. 47 "Kreutzer": III. Finale (Presto).

Recorded for the Beethoven bicentenary in 1970, violinist Yehudi Menuhin and pianist Wilhelm Kempff's recordings of the composer's complete violin sonatas are excerpted here to couple the two best-known: the "Spring" and "Kreutzer" sonatas. Before the fact, the partnership seemed unlikely to succeed, Menuhin being warm-toned, romantically lyrical, and rhythmically impulsive and Kempff dry-toned, classically polished, and rhythmically reserved.

The Violin Sonata No. 9, Op. 47, by Ludwig van Beethoven, is a sonata for piano and violin notable for its technical difficulty, unusual length (around 40 minutes), and emotional scope. It is commonly known as the Kreutzer Sonata after the violinist Rodolphe Kreutzer, to whom it was ultimately dedicated, but who thoroughly disliked the piece and refused to play it.

Beethoven: Sonata For Violin And Piano N. In A, O. 0 N. - 1. Allegro by Gidon Kremer and Martha Argerich. Kremer and Argerich play all the tracks of the four CDs except for three on the 2nd CD. Menuhin and Kempff play variations on theme of The Marriage of Figaro and Rondo in G major. And on third track Garret and Canino play Six German Dances. An 85-page booklet comes with the set.
