Ambient is now used to describe all kinds of music, from tracks you can dance to all the way to harsh noise. But first, a word from someone whose work appears on this list. THE NAMELESS, UNCARVED BLOCK By Keith Fullerton Whitman. The album was crafted from a relatively spartan setup-a pair of clarinets, two basses, one cello, a piano, and a tape delay-which makes it feel simple and human. Songs like Reflector and Postcard From Brilliant Orange are ambiguous, cavernously spaced, and emotional.
Ambient music has a tricky relationship with form: Make the structure too obvious, and too obviously musical, and you move into a different realm. The result might be a song, or a dance track, or a composition, but it’s no longer ambient-that formless form whose outline is blurry by definition and its center squishy. Virgins goes right to the heart of that conundrum. The Tamburas of Pandit Pran Nath (An Homage)-performed by Young and his partner, Zazeela-is primarily a drone album and one of the best ever, fit for dreamy contemplation.

Ambient is the second studio album by American electronica musician Moby, released in August 1993 by record label Instinct. The album is composed of electronic ambient pieces, similar to Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works releases. Like the Aphex Twin releases, the work is mainly instrumental (although there are samples of the sound of a choir vocalizing on "Tongues", and a woman saying 'bad days' in the background of "Bad Days")
The best ambient music struck its loudest chords in the 70’s and 90’s. In the 70’s, Brian Eno made the single greatest stride in the history of ambient music with a series of exceedingly beautiful vinyl adventures that still hold up to this very day. These works acted as a catalyst to any type of modern beat-less, instrumental music existing. Eno proved that instrumental electronic music can be just as emotional as the most complicated Mozart symphony, or more importantly (in the face of tired rock aesthetics), the longest screeching guitar solo.
Here it is, the Optimistic Underground list of best ambient albums ever made. This is a sound that I've been in love with my whole life, so the only problem was narrowing it down. Most people think of Slowdive as the band that released the second best shoegaze album behind My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, pointing to Souvlaki as a premier example of the genre. They’re not wrong; that album contains some of the finest shoegaze ever made. But Pygmalion is where Slowdive truly blossomed into an utterly unique form of ambient avant garde dreampop. The album unfolds over glistening, icy landscapes carved out of nition guitars, with vocals winding by like frigid wind through a canyon.

This is one of the best ambient albums I ever heard. If you haven't heard it, you really should. I am greatly disturbed that this album wasn't already on this list. It's one of the most significant and influential albums of the genre. It came out in 1978, and it's still just as mind blowing.
