Empty Glass, released in 1980, is the first solo album of original material, and third album overall, by Pete Townshend. It deals with issues that Townshend was struggling with, including alcoholism, drug abuse, marital problems and deceased friends, particularly Keith Moon, The Who's drummer, who died in 1978. Empty Glass contained the devotional love song, "Let My Love Open the Door", which became a top ten hit in the US, and the modestly successful singles "Rough Boys" and "A Little Is Enough".
Pete Townshend was heading toward collapse as the '70s turned into the '80s. He had battled a number of personal demons throughout the '70s, but he started spiraling downward after Keith Moon's death, questioning more than ever why he did what he did (and this is a songwriter who always asked questions). Signs of that crept out on Face Dances, but he saved a full-blown exploration of his psyche for Empty Glass, his first solo album since Who Came First, a vanity project released to little notice around Who's Next (so limited in its distribution that Empty Glass seemed.
Pete Townshend started experimenting with a recording career outside the Who in the early '70s, but it would take him until 1980 to produce the album he'd later call his official solo debut. Titled Empty Glass, the record arrived during a tumultuous time for Townshend and his comrades in the Who. Still reeling from the death of drummer Keith Moon in 1978 and slowly working their way back from a period of curtailed touring and decreased activity following their 1976 tour, they were a different band in more ways than one as the '70s waned.

The album deals with a plethora of issues that Townshend was struggling with, including alcoholism, drug abuse, marital problems and deceased friends, particularly Keith Moon, The Who's drummer died in 1978. And when I did my first solo album, I called it Empty Glass, 'cause of this idea that when you go to the tavern – which is to God, you know – and you ask for His love – He's the bartender, you know – and He gives you a drink, and what you have to give Him is an empty glass. You know there's no point giving Him your heart if it's full already; there's no point going to God if your heart's full of Doris. This concept was derived from the work of the Persian poet Hafez, which Townshend became interested in from his involvement with Avatar, Meher Baba.

Empty Glass, Townshends third album under his own name but his first real solo album, is quite frankly everything The Who had been years before and everything they may of been if they had given Pete a chance at turning The Who in the direction he would of liked to. Having offered most of these songs to The Who at some point and having been rejected, a resentful Townshend simply began to treat the band as a side project and an obligation, and withheld his best and better material for himself
