As Thomaskantor Johann Sebastian Bach provided Passion music for Good Friday services in Leipzig. The extant St Matthew Passion and St John Passion are Passion oratorios composed by Bach. According to his "Nekrolog", the 1754 obituary written by Johann Friedrich Agricola and the composer's son Carl Philipp Emanuel, Bach wrote "five Passions, of which one is for double chorus". The double chorus one is easily identified as the St Matthew Passion

Bach: Matthäus-Passion St. Matthew's Passion Sir Georg Solti. One doesn't ordinarily connect the names of Georg Solti and J. S. Bach; the late conductor is best known for his "blockbuster" recordings of such late romantics as Wagner, Mahler, and Richard Strauss. But late in his career he came to record some very fine versions of standard Eighteenth century repertoire, including this St. Matthew Passion.

What makes Gardiner's St Matthew Passion stand out in the face of stiff competition is, more than anything, his vivid sense of theatre. For Bach, the two halves were 28 metres apart. At that distance, coordination difficulties begin to appear between the speed of light, and the speed of sound, and we cannot determine how Bach dealt with this problem. However the wonders of SACD multichannel surround sound can at last give an impression of what Bach intended for St Thomas’ Church in Leipzig. As ever, harmonia mundi's production values are such that we are given several essays on the concept of the layout in Bach's time, reflections on the new recording by René Jacobs, full texts and biographies in a 176 page booklet,.

The members of The Scholars Baroque Ensemble are all specialists in the field of Baroque music and play original instruments (or copies) using contemporary techniques. Singers and players work together without a Director to produce their town versions of great baroque masterworks such as the St. John Passion (BWV 245) by . Bach, the 1610 Vespers by Monteverdi, The Fairy Queen by Purcell and the Messiah and Acis and Galatea by George Frideric Handel, all of which are being released by Naxos.
