Rap The Greatest Rappers of All Time. Originally by Ranker Community. List Rules Only individual rappers, not rap groups or collectives. What makes a rapper great? There are a number of differing definitions and philosophies. Rapper J. Cole (who finds himself on the Ultimate List below) cites consistency as the most important attribute, and says it's important to look both for the big humorous "punch" lines as well as the underlying message of the rapper's songs. Nas (another MC featured on the list) focuses as well on the meaning of the songs, as well as the scale and ambition of the rapper's narratives and storytelling.

Non-album single, 1996 One of hip-hop’s most powerful mourning anthems put Midwest hip-hop on the map. At the time, Bone Thugs had lost several loved ones, including Eazy E, who signed them in 1993. To this day, when we perform it, said Krayzie Bone, there will be, like, 20 people in the crowd crying. Before his sudden death in 2007, rapper Pimp C celebrated his release from jail with this lush posse cut: Houston’s reigning hip-hop duo UGK were joined by fellow Dirty South crews Outkast and producers Three 6 Mafia for a celebration of playalistic splendor over a sweet sample from the soundtrack for the blaxploitation film The Mack.

I Am the Greatest is a comedy album by boxer Cassius Clay, released in August 1963 – six months before he won the world heavyweight championship, publicly announced his conversion to Islam, and changed his name to Muhammad Ali. It was released by CBS Columbia. The album helped establish Ali's reputation as an eloquently poetic "trash talker". The album has also been identified as an early example of rap music and a precursor to hip hop music.

Greatest Rappers of All Time. Diehard fans, music nerds and critics love lists. But in rap, rankings like this take on a special level of import: aside from moving a crowd (shouts to Rakim), MC means proving you’re the best. Unlike many of the 1980s legends, the greatest rappers of the '90s - from Jay Z to Andre 3000 - maintained relevance into the next decade and the one after. One reason why is that despite the genre’s ever-shifting sounds, rapping didn’t change much as a craft since the end of the golden era; the techniques were largely the same, just over different beats. Until Kendrick Lamar came along. Before Nas’ debut album, 1994’s seminal Illmatic, early hype had critics and fans calling him the second coming - of Rakim, not Jesus, but still.

The 50 Greatest Rappers of All Time. Queen Latifah wasn't the first female rapper, but she was definitely the first to become a star. Her third album, "Black Reign," became the first by a female emcee to be certified gold. Essential: "All Hail the Queen". Some of the album’s most unforgettable tunes are poignant tributes to motherhood, relationships, and culture. Lauryn is one of the greatest emcees of all time, male or female. Essential: "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill". Tim Mosenfelder, Getty Images.

Nasir Jones, the greatest rapper of all time. It still sounds strange saying it. A decade ago, Nas wouldn’t have even appeared in my top 5. Top 10 maybe, but nowhere near number 1. But then he dropped Hip Hop is Dead, Untitled, Distant Relatives and Life Is Good – and the truth slowly dawned on me. Nas is absolutely the greatest rapper of all time. As one of the chief New York lyricists since the ‘90s, Nas has always been an incredible rapper since his debut on wax. But as a hip hop artist, he’s grown and matured so much, it’s extraordinary.

That’s what made Tupac the greatest rapper of all time. But to me, Tupac was first and foremost a homeboy. The way our journey started together. We were both born in ‘71. He released his first single track from his scorcher first album 2pacalypse Now in late 1991. Not even a year later I would make my debut alongside Dr. Dre on the song, G Thang. I finally got a chance to meet Pac in 1993 at a rap party in . And on that night, Pac passed me my first blunt. I’m not talking about Pac the rapper, I’m not talking about Tupac the actor, I’m talking about Tupac the human being. So with that said, we’d all like to officially welcome Tupac Shakur to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You will always be the best.

I have every album, and you cannot say he is not the legend that is. He is the best rapper alive, coz he is alive, i belive and anyone that has read articles and things on the net, and that really belives in Pac will agree that he is alive. Biggie is an amazing rapper, as people have said his lyrics and control are better than anyones. But the things Pac raps about, it feels like you no him, and no his life. My List of Rappers: 1. Tupac Shakur- undoublty the best sinical rapper of time. Touched peoples hearts and influenced black people and white (i am white) across the world, also influenced. 3. Jay z- if your talking about greatest rappers, you cant lieave him out. I dont think he comes near the two above, but becoz he has been around long, he has influenced the game and made bundles. Not my favourtei but he has to be up there.
