A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart. Inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (251–183 BC), specifically Pseudolus, Miles Gloriosus, and Mostellaria, the musical tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door

Music By, Lyrics By – Stephen Sondheim. Producer – Phil Ramone. Original 1996 Broadway Cast Recording Book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart.

Somehow, though, it found its way into the film. But this Sondheim musical is the sole example of Roman Comedy - specifically the play MILES GLORIOUSUS ("THE BOASTFUL SOLDIER"). When Aristophanes created "Old Comedy" he created a phantasy comedy of kingdoms of birds or dead playwrites holding contests for supremacy. Political satire was also quite important. For that reason alone A FUNNY THING HAPPENED is worth watching and enjoying.

A Funny Thing That Happened on the Way to the Forum is a great soundtrack from a movie (obviously named the same thing).
