Homeland (Miriam Makeba album). For other uses, see Homeland (disambiguation). Studio album by Miriam Makeba. Homeland is a 2000 album by South African singer Miriam Makeba. It was released in 2000 on CD by world music label Putumayo. It includes a duet starring Makeba and Zenzi Lee in a renovated version of Makeba's trademark hit song "Pata Pata" (1967), entitled "Pata Pata 2000" Both the title-track and the whole record are largely conceived as a celebration of the end of apartheid
Zenzile Miriam Makeba (4 March 1932 – 9 November 2008), nicknamed Mama Africa, was a South African singer, songwriter, actress, United Nations goodwill ambassador, and civil rights activist. Associated with musical genres including Afropop, jazz, and world music, she was an advocate against apartheid and white-minority government in South Africa. Born in Johannesburg to Swazi and Xhosa parents, Makeba was forced to find employment as a child after the death of her father.
Now back home in South Africa, Makeba hadn't done much recording in the 1990s prior to this release, so Homeland amounts to a way of introducing herself to new audiences and updating older fans. Alas, the voice of the mighty Makeba, who was in her late sixties when this CD was recorded, frequently sounds worn and quavery (these sessions may have been an aberration, for she could still summon much of her spine-chilling power of old at the Hollywood Bowl in summer 2000)
Pata Pata 2000, 03:49. Cause We Live for Love, 04:36.
This new album is not for Makeba neophytes, but instead for those of us who are long-time fans of this brilliant musician. The difficult rhythms and lyrics and her aging voice led me to wax nostalgic for the Xhosa folk music of earlier cd's and albums. Nevertheless, there is great music here. I was especially moved by the children's choir on two of the songs, and the tender songs of love.
