Like Day, Jesse Johnson wasted no time launching a solo career; he signed with A&M as a solo artist in 1984, and his first solo effort, Jesse Johnson's Revue, came out the following year. Anyone who was expecting the singer/guitarist to get away from the Minneapolis sound and try something different was in for a letdown; all of the material is quite derivative of Prince and the Time. A pop/rock classic, "I Want My Girl" is easily the best thing on the album

Jesse Johnson’s Revue followed in the same New Wave-tinged, Minneapolis funk that made the The Time so popular. Could Johnson had done a little more in 1985? Yes, he could had. But the sound was still pretty hot at the time, so in Johnson’s case, if it isn't broke, don’t fix it, right? As formulaic and derivative as Jesse Johnson’s Revue is, the album had some fun tracks that will get you dancing. Be You Man (No. 4 R&B, No. 61 Hot 100) was an infectious groove, and the more mid-tempo Can You Help Me? (No. 3 R&B, No. 110 Hot 100) was also a nice track. Part of the charm of She Won’t Let Go was that it steered away from the New Wave-tinged funk that dominated the rest of the album. It sounded different, and that was a good thing. It was a shame that She Won’t Let Go was not released as a single, it would had been a huge hit.
