By the mid seventies his recordings became funkier and more commercial. His 1977 album 'Music Is My Sanctuary' is considered one of the finest fusion albums of it's generation, with the title track receiving 'rare groove' status.

Gary Bartz has been on the short list for artists I should post more of since pretty much the first week. And yet I have done pitifully little about it. Alas, the story of Flabbergasted Vibes is composed of an endless string of shattered dreams and broken promises. Music Is My Sanctuary was the second collaboration between Gary Bartz and the Mizells. The first one, The Shadow Do, is a perfectly okay album but somewhat underwhelming, almost enough to make one think that Bartz had taken a temporary wrong turn. But Music Is My Sanctuary is a fully-realized, exemplary work, so it is unsurprising that this is the one that jumps out at everyone and gets remembered. It doesn’t hurt that the wonderful voice of Syreeta leads the album on the opening title track, where she also sings the word hypnotical which I always feel shouldn’t really be a word but the.
In liner notes to his album released in 1995, The Red and Orange Poems, Bartz was described by jazz critic Stanley Crouch as "one of the very best who has ever picked up the instrument". He has recorded more than 40 solo albums and over 200 as a guest artist. He won a Grammy Award in 2005 for his playing on McCoy Tyner's album Illuminations. Bartz was awarded the BNY Mellon Jazz 2015 Living Legacy Award, presented at a special ceremony at The Kennedy Center. He currently teaches at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio, when not touring.
Gary Bartz steps into his own on this 1973 album, jumping back and forth between alto and soprano saxophone and delivering a solid set of exploratory, rhythmic tunes. His 10-minute overhaul of the Jackson Five's "I Wanna Be Where You Are" will leave you winded, as will the rock-solid "Bertha Baptist. Andy Bey lends his incredible vocals to "Black Maybe.
