Dame Vera Margaret Lynn CH DBE OStJ (née Welch; born 20 March 1917) is an English singer of traditional pop, songwriter and actress, whose musical recordings and performances were enormously popular during the Second World War. She is widely known as "the Forces' Sweetheart" for giving outdoor concerts for the troops in Egypt, India, and Burma during the war as part of Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA)
Forces’ sweetheart Vera, who started singing at the tender age of seven, couldn't contain her delight while greeting onlookers as she emerged less than a week after Armed Forces Day, which took place on June 29. In high spirits: Dame Vera Lynn is still smiling at 102 as she waved to fans in a rare appearance in Brighton earlier this month. Just last year, Vera received a Lifetime Achievement prize at the Classic Brits Awards for her service in the music industry. With her prize, she became the oldest living artist to score a top 10 album on the Official Album Charts. It features re-orchestrated versions of her best-known songs, cover versions by singers including Alfie Boe and Aled Jones and a previously unreleased recording of Lynn singing Sailing, the 1972 Sutherland Brothers song later made famous by Rod Stewart.
