Carmen Amaya (2 November 1918 – 19 November 1963) was a Spanish Romani flamenco dancer and singer, born in the Somorrostro district of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. She has been called "the greatest Spanish Romani dancer of her generation" and "the most extraordinary personality of all time in flamenco dance. Carmen Amaya was arguably the greatest female flamenco dancer of this century, and certainly the most influential - as influential in her day and area as Lucía has been in his. Carmen died in 1963. Happily, a moderate amount of film footage of her survives. What I have been privileged to see absolutely confirms her reputation. Queen of the Gypsies is a new biography of Carmen, and complete is not even an adequate word for it; I should rather say exhaustive. Much of the material about Sabicas (who, very properly, has a chapter to himself) was unknown to me; in the paradox of many great performers, he was a shy person, and would rather talk about his music than his life. There are several excellent photographs. Queen of the Gypsies is a very thorough job indeed, and a major contribution to the flamenco literature. It includes a glossary, a list of references, and an index.
