Mascagni: Cavalleria rusticana (1953 - Serafin) - Callas Remastered. Audio CD. Maria Callas. Serafin and the La Scala Orchestra and Chorus are excellent. Disc: 1. 1. Cavalleria Rusticana: Preludio. 2. Cavalleria Rusticana: O Lola ch'hai di latti la cammisa. 3. 4. Cavalleria Rusticana: Gli aranci olezzano. 5. Cavalleria Rusticana: Dite, Mamma Lucia. Giuseppe di Stefano is fine in both operas, as is Rolando Panerai (who sings a beautiful love duet with Callas in "Pagliacci"), but Tito Gobbi's deformed clown Tonio in "Pagliacci" is amazing, and his confrontation with Callas' Nedda is hair-raising. Surely, these operas have been given some very fine recordings (most notably the "Cav" and "Pag" conducted by Herbert von Karajan on DGG), but none -- absolutely NONE -- have been better than these.

Cavalleria rusticana (pronounced ; Italian for "rustic chivalry") is an opera in one act by Pietro Mascagni to an Italian libretto by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti and Guido Menasci, adapted from an 1880 short story of the same name and subsequent play by Giovanni Verga. Considered one of the classic verismo operas, it premiered on 17 May 1890 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome.

This is a discography of Cavalleria rusticana, an opera by Pietro Mascagni. It premiered at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome on 17 May 17, 1890. There have been over 100 full-length recordings of Cavalleria rusticana published since it was first recorded in Germany in 1909. Mascagni himself has conducted the opera in two recordings, the best-known of which is the 1940 EMI recording made to mark the 50th anniversary of the opera's premiere  .
