BUELL NEIDLINGER is a third stream avant-garde jazz music artist. Buell Neidlinger, a bassist, cellist and educator who worked within a wide spectrum of jazz styles, from Dixieland to the avant-garde, died suddenly on Friday (March 17, 2018) afternoon at his home on Whidbey Island, Wash. He was two weeks past his 82nd birthday. Neidlinger was best known for his early collaboration with pianist Cecil Taylor; they appeared together on six albums made between 1956 and 1961.
Buell Neidlinger, the legendary double-bassist and cellist, died of a heart attack March 16 at age 83, The New York Times confirmed over the weekend. While never a household name, the Connecticut-born bass player played alongside Cecil Taylor then spent the rest of his prolific career appearing right behind the curtain with mainstream pop performers. Neidlinger was no late bloomer with his extraordinary gifts. Buell Neidlinger: Oh, when I was young I was one of those – what do you call those people – prodigies? I was a cellist, and my cello teacher Luigi Silva’s idea was that in the summer you should take bass lessons for a month, because it would strengthen your hand for the cello, which is very true. Not only that, it makes the fingerboard of the cello seem that much smaller, and so the technical demands seemed much less than they had previously.
