When Roger McGuinn phoned into Rolling Stone earlier this week, he was just a few hours away from playing his first Byrds concert in over a quarter century. Well, sort of. His current run of shows may include his fellow Byrd Chris Hillman and they may be playing the group’s most beloved album, 1968’s Sweetheart of the Rodeo, straight through in honor of its 50th anniversary in addition to a whole other set of Byrds classics, but they aren’t billing this precisely as a reunion.
The pair will be backed by Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives. Originally issued in 1968, Sweetheart Of The Rodeo was recorded during Graham Parsons’ short-lived stint as a member of The Byrds. McGuinn and Hillman will tell stories behind the songs making up the LP and they’ll perform other selections from their careers. Stuart currently owns and plays the 1954 Fender Telecaster originally utilized by renowned session musician Clarence White who contributed to Sweetheart Of The Rodeo. Prior to the start of the tour, some of the songs on Sweetheart Of The Rodeo will be performed by McGuinn, Hillman and their supporting cast at Stuart’s Late Night Jam taking place this Wednesday, June 6 at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.
