Merriweather Post Pavilion. Released January 6, 2009. Merriweather Post Pavilion Tracklist. 1. In the Flowers Lyrics. That mystery is ultimately the most wonderful thing about the album. Unlike so many indie-rock crossover artists before them, Animal Collective did not breach the mainstream by cleaning up their act, or adopting classic-rock conventions, or scoring a strategic soundtrack or iPod-commercial placement. And, above all, they did little to formalize their defining mercurial quality. Merriweather Post Pavilion Q&A.
Merriweather Post Pavilion, their latest full-length, has been anticipated to an almost ridiculous degree, with blogs and message boards lighting up with each scrap of new information or word of a possible leak. No one who's been looking forward to it should be disappointed. Everything that's defined the band to this point- all those strands winding through their hugely diverse catalog- is refined and amplified here. Although it will be tagged as Animal Collective's "pop" album, Merriweather Post Pavilion remains drenched in their idiosyncratic sound, a record that no one else could have made. The album is named for a Maryland venue that last year played host to Santana, Sheryl Crow, and John Mayer, but its songs won't be heard on the radio, and besides, Animal Collective's . requires them to exist outside of rigid formats.

On Strawberry Jam, Animal Collective infused pop songwriting with a mercurial electronic spirit; on 2009’s Merriweather Post Pavilion, they find beauty in chaos-and vice versa. My Girls arrays dizzying, Beach Boys–inspired vocal harmonies over synths that explode like fireworks; Summertime Clothes starts like a battle hymn for a kazoo army and turns into a bubbling fountain of pure joy. And on the closing Brother Sport, Brazilian samba rhythms and AM-radio frequencies put a globe-trotting spin on the group’s restless sound. Merriweather Post Pavilion Animal Collective. Merriweather Post Pavilion was anticipated with an almost unnatural fervor in the months after its release was announced. Animal Collective owe much of this popularity to the indie/experimental rock community, specifically on the internet in message boards and fansites, who hold them in high esteem. They've gained that recognition through a constant flow of solid albums, each of which has expanded on one of the most unique sounds in experimental music
They named this album Merriweather Post Pavilion after the amphitheater they would’ve only daydreamed of playing as teenagers growing up in the suburbs of Baltimore. Though they had to wait another two years after the album came out, they did eventually make it onto that stage. They didn’t play My Girls, which is almost funny considering that song is a big part of the reason they finally made it up there in the first place.
