Heartattack and Vine is the sixth studio album by Tom Waits and his final album to be released on the Asylum label, released in September 1980. Bruce Springsteen has performed "Jersey Girl" as part of his live shows since the early 1980s, including it in his live retrospective "Live/1975–85". For the only time to date, Waits joined him onstage to sing it on August 24, 1981.

Tom Waits on the Heartattack And Vine, US Promo Pack, 1980: I was in a bar one night on Hollywood Boulevard near Vine Street, and this lady came in with a dead animal over her arm, looking like she’d obviously been sleeping outdoors. She walked up to the bartender and said, I’m gonna have a heart attack, and he says, Yeah, right, you can have it outside. I thought that was pretty chilly. So I re-named Hollywood Blvd. Heartattack and Vine" Track Info. Written By Tom Waits.

Heartattack and Vine is Tom Waits' seventh and final album for Asylum. As such, it's transitional. As demonstrated by its immediate predecessors, 1978's excellent Blue Valentine and 1977's Foreign Affairs, he was already messing with off-kilter rhythms even in the most conventionally structured blues and jazz songs, with nastier-sounding guitars - he plays a particularly gnarly style of rhythm on this entire album. Five of these nine tracks are rooted in gutbucket blues with rock edges and primal R&B beats.

Heartattack And Vine Remastered. LP (12" album, 33 rpm). Tom Waits Format: Vinyl. Released in 1980, Heartattack and Vine was Waits’ final album on Elektra /Asylum Records and it built on the raw blues approach of Blue Valentine with the incendiary title track, the funky, organ driven Downtown and the stomping NOLA blues of Mr. Siegal. This album also contains some of Waits most popular ballads, including Jersey Girl which was famously a hit for Bruce Springsteen. On the Nickle is a moving song about the homeless people who lived on 5th street in downtown LA, and Ruby’s Arms is a beautiful song with a lovely Bach-like melody.
