The principal difference between clawhammer style and other styles is the picking direction. Traditional picking styles (classic banjo), including those for folk, bluegrass, and classical guitar, consist of an up-picking motion by the fingers and a down-picking motion by the thumb; this is also the technique used in the Scruggs style for the banjo. Clawhammer picking, by contrast, is primarily a down-picking style.

The catbird seat" is an American English idiomatic phrase used to describe an enviable position, often in terms of having the upper hand or greater advantage in any type of dealing among parties. Henry, Linda (2016). Walt Koken Interview". . Smith, Malcolm (2011). Livin' old-time with Walt Koken and Clare Milliner".

Walt Koken (born October 9, 1946, Columbia, Missouri) is an American claw-hammer banjo player and old-time fiddler, who received the Nashville Old-Time String Band Association's Heritage Award for 2016. Koken was prominent in the old-time music revival during the 1960s, and continues to be a leader and mentor in the old-time music community today.

Walt Koken seems to play two banjos at the same time, plucking the tune on one and strumming a driving, percussive accompaniment on the other, as if overlaying a frailed 5-string with a Dixieland plectrum or tenor. I’ve struggled to run that style to ground, but until recently I could find only a handful of Walt’s videos on line, and none was very helpful. Even watching Walt at close range, I couldn’t figure out how he does it. Every banjoist I know admires him, but no one understands how he can make Mineola Rag sound as if it had been written for the 5-string  . He rarely hammers-on (in Cripple Creek, the most conventional arrangement on the DVD, he hammers on the 4th string in the 8th measure the first time through but switches to more ringing pull-offs thereafter).

The Catbird Seat combines Thurber’s interests in baseball and in the Walter Mitty character. The mild-mannered protagonist of this story, Mr. Martin, is afflicted in his workplace by a loud, aggressive woman named Ulgine Barrows. Although she has been hired to reduce company expenditures and thus constitutes a threat to his security, he hates most her habit of taunting him with colorful expressions drawn from the lexicon of Red Barber, the real-life play-by-play announcer of the Brooklyn Dodgers.
