This self-titled album is the first of four albums recorded by the second incarnation of The Manhattan Transfer: Tim Hauser, Janis Siegel, Alan Paul and Laurel Massé. The album was released on April 2, 1975 and debuted on Billboard’s Top Pop Album charts on May 3, 1975 and eventually went to based partially on the strength of the single Operator which went to on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart.

This album took the Manhattan Transfer in a different direction from their previous releases, offering a new, revised style of their music. There were several collaborations on this album, including Stevie Wonder, Rod Temperton, and Jeremy Lubbock. Also appearing as a guest artist on the album was Frankie Valli, who appears on the song "American Pop". The final track on the album, "The Night That Monk Returned to Heaven", is a tribute to American jazz pianist Thelonious Monk. It reached the Billboard magazine Best Seller chart on April 5, 1945 at No. 10, its only week on the chart. Big Maybelle's version of the song received the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999 and went to No. 11 on the Billboard R&B chart in 1956. A notable jazz version was recorded by Lee Morgan as a teen-aged.
