Part I begins with the prophecy of the Messiah and his birth, shows the annunciation to the shepherds and reflects the Messiah's deeds on earth

Handel wrote Messiah for modest vocal and instrumental forces, with optional settings for many of the individual numbers. In the years after his death, the work was adapted for performance on a much larger scale, with giant orchestras and choirs. In other efforts to update it, its orchestration was revised and amplified by (among others) Mozart (Der Messias). Händel-Bearbeitungen: Der Messias,Kritische Berichte". Neue Mozart Ausgabe, Series X, Werkgruppe 28, Band 2. Kassel: Bärenreiter: 40–42. a b Robbins Landon, p. 338.

The terms A-side and B-side refer to the two sides of 78, 45, and 33 1⁄3 rpm phonograph records, or cassettes, whether singles, extended plays (EPs), or long-playing (LP) records. The A-side usually featured the recording that the artist, record producer, or the record company intended to receive the initial promotional effort and then receive radio airplay, hopefully, to become a "hit" record

On the initiative of Gottfried van Swieten, Mozart adapted Handel's work for performances in Vienna. The libretto of Mozart's adaptation was largely based on Luther's translation of the Bible

A b-side was originally known as the song on the flipside of a 12" or 7" vinyl single that backed the A-side, but wasn't the song promoted or received the radio play. Today CD singles have b-sides along with remixes, even though ironically CD singles only have one side that is used. With CD singles dying a slow death today, b-sides are becoming a rarer commodity. B-sides are usually songs that do not appear on the actually album that the A-side appears on, ocassionally it does. The b-side song was usually determined not to fit in with the overall sound of the album or it was considered not good enough to be on the album or just plain leftover tracks, so hence it's usage as a b-side. B-sides have often gotten a reputation of being filler and sub-par, even though a good majority of the time b-sides are better than a lot of the album tracks, and in some cases, better than the A-side.
