Reich's string-quartet memorial to the victims of the World Trade Center atrocity is wonderfully lucid and calculated precisely, writes Andrew Clements. Nonesuch continues to keep its Steve Reich discography up to date with major works from 2009 and 2010, alongside a smaller earlier piece, Dance Patterns for pairs of xylophones, vibraphones and pianos, from 2002.

Steve Reich’s WTC 9/11 I must say fails utterly to communicate that day’s specialness. Listening to it has brought back nothing for me, unlike writing the paragraph above, which was emotionally meaningful. The Kronos Quartet plays some repetitive patterns that mimic the prerecorded spoken fragments mixed in by Reich, fragments related to 9/11 that come from various interviewees, including firefighters and ordinary residents.

WTC 9/11 is a composition by Steve Reich for string quartet written in 2009–2010 which premiered on March 19, 2011 at Duke University. The piece was written for the Kronos Quartet, who performed the premiere, and was co-commissioned by Barbican Centre, Carnegie Hall, Duke University, the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County, the Phyllis C. Wattis Foundation, Chamber Music America and the National Endowment for the Arts.
