The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.

In the 1950s, the album charts were dominated by easy listening singers like Bing Crosby and endless musicals, records that only have niche audiences now. But so many top LPs from the 1960s continue to enthrall old and new listeners, and they're still re-discovered and re-assessed. This list is Pitchfork’s attempt to do just that. Inevitably, our list also reflects the realities of the marketplace in the ’60s-some brilliant singles artists never made a great album. For such troubles, Joan Baez called him the closest living offshoot of Leadbelly, while the Coen brothers loosely based Inside Llewyn Davis on him, finally giving this perennial outsider his due. –Stacey Anderson. Listen: Dave Van Ronk: Hang Me, Oh Hang Me.

Living in the Past is a double album quasi-compilation collection by Jethro Tull, which contains album tracks, out-takes, the "Life's a Long Song" EP, and all of their non-LP singles except for "Sunshine Day"/"Aeroplane" (1968), "One for John Gee" (b-side of "A Song for Jeffrey", 1968), "17" (b-side of "Sweet Dream", 1969) and the original version of "Teacher" that appeared in the UK as the b-side of "The Witch's Promise" in 1969 (the re-recorded 1970 one that was released on the American versio.

Not to be confused with: Living Stereo 60 CD Collection or Living Stereo 60 CD Collection Vol. 2 The earlier boxes were devoted to best-selling LPs from the 1950s and '60s (lots of Heifetz, Rubinstein and Cliburn). The new one is what's left over: odds and ends from RCA's "Living Stereo" catalog. For the first time in one of these boxes, the original program notes are reprinted in the booklet (in readable type).
