Growers of Mushroom is the first album by British hard rock band Leaf Hound. The album reportedly took only 11 hours to record in Mayfair's Spot Studios. Growers of Mushroom became a collectors' item in the years to come and was voted the number one most collectible rock album in Q magazine.
Leaf Hound - like Killing Floor - was one of dozens of other working-class heavy rock bands who sprouted up in England during the British blues-rock boom of the late '60s. They immediately found themselves in the shadow of better bands, including Led Zeppelin and Free (to name just two), which may have led to their short life together. They recorded only one album, Growers of Mushroom, which found its first release in on the German-based Telefunken label. Somewhat surprisingly, however, the title track and leadoff track, "Freelance Fiend," were both left off that release.

Leaf Hound is an English 1960s/1970s hard rock band. The group has been cited as a major influence on the stoner rock movement. Leaf Hound formed in 1969 under their original name, Black Cat Bones. Early incarnations of the Black Cat Bones featured guitarist Paul Kossoff and drummer Simon Kirke who both left to form Free. Black Cat Bones issued one album for Decca Records entitled Barbed Wire Sandwich.

Saying that Leaf Hound's "Growers of Mushroom" is prog is a bit of a stretch. Surely there are tempo changes in some songs and the band employs a diverse range of tones for each song, but I would liken this album to early heavy metal, in the vein of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Stoner rock fans hail Leaf Hound as one of the pioneers of their genre - and it is not hard to see why in the opening track of the album "Freelance Fiend"; a short but very heavy song, especially for 1970
