Splinter’ is very clearly a labour of love. Theoretically three years in the making and worth every single day of the wait. You can probably guess what’s in store from the opening of album lead, ‘I Am Dust’. Slowly juggernauting into view, analogue bleeps, groaning bass-lines, clear thumping percussion and ‘that’ voice. That voice that has shaped generations, often subject to pathetic copies, never beaten. Unmistakably Numan, sounding fuller and stronger than ever, the voice has aged incredibly. The hype around ‘Splinter’ seemed never-ending, and quite rightly so. After releasing material in every one of the last five decades, Numan shows no signs of his unique talent subsiding. Splinter’ is nothing short of a triumph. Best album of 2013? It’s certainly up there.

Splinter is Numan’s first album of entirely new material in over seven years, following 2006’s critically acclaimed Jagged, but this album didn’t take a full seven years to make. The title was revealed shortly after Jagged’s release, but as John Lennon once said, Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans. A soft, delicate song totally absent of any of the cold, harsh electronics or dystopian technoscape heard elsewhere on Splinter, the sparse Lost is easily one of the most beautiful, elegant pieces of his entire career. It’s written from the perspective of a protagonist who has walked out on his new family because he couldn’t handle the changes in lifestyle and life in general, a narrative that seems to act as an exorcism of Numan’s personal fears. Gary Numan is easily poised for a comeback, even though he never really went anywhere, and Splinter is easily his strongest album in years.

Gary Numan is a bona fide synth-rock pioneer and the artist behind Cars, one the biggest and most beloved new wave hits of all time. His critically acclaimed 12th studio album, Splinter (Songs from a Broken Mind), is his highest-charting release since 1983. It’s lovely when you read, but the way you feel about yourself doesn’t change. I’m still nervous now going into a studio - just.
