Echoes in a Shallow Bay is an EP by Scottish alternative rock band Cocteau Twins, released on 4AD. The EP featured four non-album tracks. It was issued on 29 November 1985, two weeks after another EP, Tiny Dynamine. The two EP sets, which featured complementary artwork, were also released as a combined double EP in a gatefold cover, and as an eight-track CD. The EP was reissued in 1991 as part of The Box Set and in 2005 as part of the singles/EP collection Lullabies to Violaine.
Appearing the same month as its companion release Tiny Dynamine, Echoes maintains the more -lush feeling of that EP; if its songs aren't quite as memorable as some of those on Dynamine, they still provide that lovely, unique Cocteau feeling in their performances and arrangements. Great Spangled Fritillary" adds a touch of dark psychedelia to the proceedings, gong-like chimes and buried feedback drones mixing with the more expected Fraser singing and drum machine loops
Album · 1985 · 4 Songs. More By Cocteau Twins. Heaven Or Las Vegas (Remastered).
This CD features the 1985 four-song EP's "Tiny Dynamite" and "Echoes in a Shallow Bay," which shows the Cocteau Twins in a bit of an experimental period between the "surely this is the voice of God" 1984 release TREASURE and the 1998 new-direction album BLUE BELL KNOLL. The production is much more raw and sparser than the songs of that album. Unlike earlier releases, guitarist and producer Robin Guthrie has here made the drum machine just a prominent as the guitar work. The "Tiny Dynamite" EP begins with the slow "Pink Orange Red". The "Echoes in a Shallow Bay" EP shows the Cocteau Twins experimenting. The first track is "Great Spangled Fritillary" One of the most remarkable songs the band has ever released, it begins with Liz Fraser intoning the same few lines again and again as the guitar slowly builds in the background. In the end, her vocals explode in a climactic series of wails.

Between June 1982 and November 1986, Cocteau Twins were an incredibly prolific group. In that span of just over four years, the group released five albums and an additional eight EPs filled with non-LP material. But when the group released two EPs in November 1985 – Tiny Dynamine on Nov. 15 and Echoes in a Shallow Bay on Nov. 29 – they very much introduced a hard left turn into their musical roadmap. It's clear that this direction was one the band wanted to fully explore, and while their protestations to the contrary were probably meant to placate confused fans, the next couple of Cocteau Twins releases – the pure, downtempo beauty of Victorialand in April 1986 and the November 1986 collaboration with Harold Budd that was basically an ambient album were interrupted by the brief.
