The 1972 concert was originally supposed to only feature the Count Basie Orchestra and Ella Fitzgerald but Granz surprised everyone by inviting some "guests": trumpeters Roy Eldridge and Harry "Sweets" Edison, the tenors of Stan Getz and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, pianist Oscar Peterson and bassist Ray Brown. Ella Fitzgerald, Tommy Flanagan Trio.
The Santa Monica Pier is a large double-jointed pier at the foot of Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica, California that is over 100 years old. The pier contains Pacific Park, a family amusement park with its solar panelled Ferris wheel. The brightly lit wheel can be seen from a distance and has been turned off during the Earth Hour observance.
When he walked onstage at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on October 20, 1972, he was Ziggy Stardust, about 70 or so shows into a 190-date tour that cemented his icon status and left tens of thousands of attendees feeling like they’d seen a go. The October 20 Santa Monica show was broadcast over the airwaves of KMET-FM and for years before it saw official release, owning a bootleg copy of the show was a badge of honor among Bowiephiles. This official release is easier to find, sounds great and provides us with a wonderful record of Bowie at an early peak. Live Santa Monica '72. rhino.
