This Friday (March 1), Test Dept will release their first new album in 21 years. Titled Disturbance, the album sees the band maintaining the protest roots of their work through their first period of activity during the '80s and '90s. Cunnington says there's a positive message to take from the new album, and that they are "trying to see something optimistic in the potential of building networks and in positive protest, instead of just rioting and looting.

It wouldn’t need to. Britain would not stand divided by xenophobia. Working class communities would not be under siege. Simon Gould Twenty-years too late but welcome nonetheless, Test Dept's new album is a familiar yet fresh mix of their clangorous origins and the technoid direction of later albums. Slow to start, this weighty and dense album really picks up in menace and atmosphere as it progresses. A surprising success after so many years of silence.

More expressly political than their German counterparts Einstürzende Neubauten, Test Department followed the same tack: A creative use of the ethos in which diverse objects (including large amounts of scrap metal and power tools) can be used as instruments. After forming their own Ministry of Power label to organize multimedia events, Test Department released two records - The Unacceptable Face of Freedom and A Good Night Out - in a MOP/Some Bizarre conjunction, but struck out on their own with 1988's Terra Firma. s sixth album, The Gododdin, was followed by their most scathing criticism of British politics, Pax Britannica, in conjunction with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Choir.

Guest appearances include The Fugees, KRS-One, Nine, Brother J of X-Clan and Junior Reid.

It is always most important to question what you see and read and hear, from all sides of the debate. When developing the new album we decided to just take germs of ideas from those albums, from the tracks we felt still had a resonance with today, mainly in the political/social themes, but also sonically. They are a re-working, a re-imagining, in a broad way, but really they are new pieces, crafted from new raw-materials with a sprinkle of spice from earlier.
