The album includes all the hits, spanning from their debut album (1964's The Kinks) to their 1984 album Word of Mouth. It was released in a double CD version, with the first side focusing on the popular hits and the second mostly on rarities and fan favourites. In August 2007 The Ultimate Collection reached in the UK top 100 album chart and in the UK Indie album chart.

By the time the album The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society was released in 1968, Davies had become a master of elegiac studies in English suburbia. The gender-bending "Lola" was a big hit in 1970 and the Kinks entered the video era in 1983 with "Come Dancing" and its memorable video.
