The 'rocket of success' was fully launched in 1967 when the band joined 'The Pig N' Whistle', a television show that for eleven seasons would be one of the highest rated shows in the CTV collection. The Carlton Showband is a Canadian musical group of the Irish genre. Formed in Brampton, Ontario in November 1963, the band initially named themselves the Carlton Danceband in reference to Toronto's Carlton Street where Maple Leaf Gardens was located. The initial recording lineup included 5 musicians from Ireland: Chris O'Toole (leader), Christy McLaughlin, Mike Feeney, Seamus Grew, Sean McManus, and Fred White (the lone Canadian, from Nova Scotia).

Fred White, Chris O'Toole, Christy McLaughlin, Seamus Grew and Sean McManus comprised the original lineup, but Mike Feeney, Johnny Patterson and Bob Lewis joined soon after. After two popular singles for Quality Records ("The Merry Ploughboy" and "Up Went Nelson"), the Carlton Showband's self-titled album appeared in 1966 on CASL Records. The following year, they became the houseband for Canadian CTV's Pig and Whistle Show
