Artist: John Mclaughlin And The 4th Dimension. Album: Live At Ronnie Scott’s.

Live At Ronnie Scott's. LP (12" album, 33 rpm), Live. John Mclaughlin And the 4th Dimension Format: Vinyl. This album exhibits the energy, creativity, and spontaneity that made John a legend all those years ago. I highly recommend it, even to listeners like me who may not be big fans of the 4th dimension band. 11 people found this helpful.

Ronnie Scott’s. mused the boundary-shattering guitarist John McLaughlin. here would I be without them? The venerable London jazz club and its charismatic namesake gave so much to McLaughlin’s career, the roots of which extend as far back as McLaughlin’s stint as a member of the club’s house band in the 1960s. They can follow him anywhere, and together on Live @ Ronnie Scott’s McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension explore everything from early Mahavishnu Orchestra classics to compositions from their most recent studio LP, Black Light. Most striking about Live @ Ronnie Scott’s is the restraint and fluidity on display: So connected are the band’s four members that the interplay approaches telepathic levels, making for powerfully evocative performances without any wasted gestures.

The 4th Dimension are pianist/drummer Gary Husband, bass guitarist Étienne Mbappé and east/west percussionist Ranjit Barot – McLaughlin’s formidable regular partners for a decade. The Mahavishnu Orchestra’s Meetings of the Spirits arrives as crashing power chords and galloping drum-work, but finally the theme’s famously brooding hook unleashes flying double-time improv from both McLaughlin and Husband. The recent Gaza City is slow-burningly lyrical, Sanctuary a mood-sustaining tone poem full of violin-like guitar entreaties.

Live @ Ronnie Scott’s sees John McLaughlin back in the London club where he played in the house band in the 1960s. Recorded in March 2017, the song selections come from opposing ends of McLaughlin’s career, drawn mainly from the first two Mahavishnu Orchestra albums and 2015’s Black Light. McLaughlin plays with a propulsive energy that puts guitarists half his age to shame. Miles Beyond starts out gently restrained with Etienne M’Bappé taking the bassline out for a walk, but McLaughlin’s solo injects the track with a shot of adrenaline. McLaughlin puts a fusion spin on the blues in New Blues Old Bruise, and the trippy Sanctuary sounds as spaced out now as it did in 1973. Vital Transformation is all syncopated beats and writhing melodic lines that refuse to hold still and Echoes From Then is a freaky R&B jam that goes where other songs fear to tread.

Album: Live at Ronnie Scotts. Artist: John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension. Label: Abstract Logix. It’s not entirely clear – even to John McLaughlin himself – how many more nights like this he will have, but the great English guitarist knows arthritis is catching up with him, so he says he plays every night like its his last. Certainly there is a retrospective air to this live set from the London club where McLaughlin began what has been an extraordinary journey through music.
