Symphony No. 5, In D Minor, Op. 107 ("Reformation") 05. First Movement: Andante; Allegro Con Fuoco (10:43) 06. Second Movement: Allegro Vivace (4:12) 0. Charles Munch, Boston Symphony - Saint Saens: Symphony 3 (1959/2014) SACD + Hi-Res. Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Sergiu Comissiona - Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 4 in A Major "Italian" & Symphony No. 5 in D Major "Reformation" (2018) FLAC. Mendelssohn: The Essentials (2018) FLAC. London Symphony Orchestra & Yondani Butt - Tchaikovsky: Symphonies Nos. 5 & 6 (2018) FLAC. Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra & James Gaffigan - Prokofiev: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 4 (2018) Hi-Res.

The Italian Symphony, in particular, abounds with joie de vivre, and the more serious Reformation Symphony maintains gravity without excessive heaviness. The encore, Mendelssohn’s orchestration of the Scherzo from his Octet, is played exactly as you’d expect of a conductor and orchestra boasting expertise in Berlioz. James Reel, FanFare). Boston Symphony Orchestra Charles Munch, conductor. Recorded in 1958, 1957 and 1960. Digitally remastered. Booklet for Mendelssohn: Symphonies Nos. 4 & 5, Octet: Scherzo.

The Italian symphony has great verve, and the Reformation symphony incredible power and balance. The BSO sounds great: luscious strings, and clear winds and horns that are in perfect balance and very present especially in the Fifth Symphony. Above all, the conducting and playing is supremely musical. As usual, Munch's conducting and interpretation are spot on. The balance is great, and it's always wonderful to hear the 5th Symphony where the "tune" for "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" comes from. 3 people found this helpful.

Mendelssohn: Italian & Reformation Symphonies Sadly this import is currently the only way to purchase Munch's towering version of the Scottish Symphony in a new CD. The other non-Munch selections on the CD are of little consequence. If you think Peter Maag owns the Mendelssohn 3rd Symphony, and many of us do, Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night's Dream, Symphony No. 3, Maag, London Symphony Orchestra you might give this Munch Boston version a listen. A powerful and impressive alternative

Felix y, Symphony No. 4 in A Major, Op. 90, "Italian". Thank you for your understanding. He conducted No 5, the "Reformation," more often than the others (twenty-two times in three seasons), and it is apparently the only work by Mendelssohn that he recorded with an orchestra other than the BSO.
