Overall, Minotaur Shock's third full-length release is fairly solid as far as the somewhat arbitrary "folktronica" genre goes. As with Rinse and Chiff-Chaffs and Willow Warblers, Edwards forces the audience to strain to discern a specific melody in any given song, though here he takes an entirely different approach to doing so. The subtle piano lines found in songs such as "The Range" have been replaced with a near cacophony of synth lines that are at certain points overwhelming. can you imagine an album that involves so many genres in it, many that aren't even of electronic origin? You'll get Maritime.
On Maritime David Edwards combines soothing, quick paced beats with playful keyboard melodies. It sounds kind of like a techno/ambient hybrid, the music is bouncy enough to appeal to techno fans and it’s definitely relaxing enough for ambient fans to enjoy. Afer listening to the first few songs it’s also obvious that Maritime blends pop, electronica, ambient, and the sounds of the ocean all together to form a slightly unique sound. While Maritime starts off promising the second half of the album doesn’t even compare to the first half. The second portion of the album is much more downbeat and dreary, it’s not depressing yet the music is a lot more calm and subdued. Songs such as Luck Shield and Mistaken Tourist possess the same atmosphere as they both use sharp, laid-back electronic clips over soothing soundscapes. I can’t deny the fact that the music is very relaxing but it is also very dry and plain.
When the Shock does muster a strong melody, he makes a synth-pop jam out of it, and those are Maritime 's better moments. There's this band with Hollywood-branch Amoeba Records employees, I think they're called the Ray Makers- anyway, for you . Six Foolish Fisherman" fakes the funk, but "Luck Shield" is "Mr. Magic" in neon, with Wurlitzer-like flutters on the head and a killer quiet bells flip. Sorry though, Pink's is an ugly.
