Maurice Andre in brilliant recordings of Trumpet Concertos by Hummel, L. Mozart, Telemann and Vivaldi. Another thing Karajan is not generally known for is the great recordings he made for EMI (and to a lesser extent Decca), as most associate him exclusively with the Berlin Philharmonic and the DG label. In 1974, André started recording what have become the standard performances of these concertos; the ones against which all others should be measured. Now, beautifully digitally remastered and compiled on one disc are four of the greatest André performances. This is truly a disc for anyone who loves to hear the trumpet sound like a tender voice.

Leopold Mozart's Trumpet Concerto in D major was completed in 1762, and is now "popular with trumpeters. The work is in two movements: Largo. Besides the solo trumpet in D, the concerto is scored for two horns in D and strings.

Between 1961 and 1986, Herbert von Karajan made three recordings of the Mozart Requiem for Deutsche Grammophon, with little change in his conception of the piece over the years. This recording, from 1975, is, on balance, the best of them. The approach is Romantic, broad, and sustained, marked by a thoroughly homogenized blend of chorus and orchestra, a remarkable richness of tone, striking power, and an almost marmoreal polish. Karajan viewed the Requiem as idealized church music rather than a confessional statement awash in operatic expressiveness.
