Take Alex Calder, the 23-year-old musician who previously played drums in DeMarco's shaggy Makeout Videotape and has now ventured out on his own with his home-recorded EP, Time. Mac hooked his fellow countryman up with Brooklyn imprint Captured Tracks which, come to think of it, was the least he could do after making Calder kiss a dead deer on camera. But for fans of DeMarco's laid-back, deadbeat jams, Calder is a worthy acolyte, and Time is a delightfully shambling debut that succeeds in spite of obvious trappings. Time's amateurism works in its favor. The lo-fidelity sonics are clearly the result of having little to work with (Calder recorded much of the EP in his living room in Montreal). He doesn't have much of a voice, but knows how to mask it in reverb. Drums are junky, "production" is nearly non-existent.

Alex Calder Time EP (Captured Tracks, 2013). This album of guitar dream pop is the perfect addition to your record collection. Known for his association with weirdo rocker Mac DeMarco, Alex finally branches off on his own and its almost a wonder why it took him so long! Back in the day when he would play a floor tom in Mac DeMarco’s old band Makeout Videotape and it is kinda surprising why he was playing back up guitar straight from the start.

Several weeks ago, I made the choice to cancel all of my upcoming shows and agreed with my label to halt my album release. I have taken a step back from any creative pursuits to start putting my energy into seeking counseling and attending consent training. Being ignorant of consent is no excuse, and I would like to thank the people in my community and elsewhere for providing resources about this.

Alex Calder's debut EP, Time, was recorded in his Montreal living room, with Calder playing all the instruments himself. He sticks to mostly the classic guitar-bass-drums setup with the occasional keyboard sneaking in, as he knocks out seven very catchy pop songs in 20 short minutes

The album sold out its 500-unit run. DeMarco worked on "psychedelic" video projects during this time. He was joined by Alex Calder and Jen Clement, signed to Unfamiliar Records, and toured with Vancouver band Japandroids in 2009. In 2011, DeMarco moved from Vancouver to Montreal to begin recording as a solo artist. Failing to find work as a musician, he participated in medical experiments for money and worked on a road paving crew. On January 9, 2012, record label Captured Tracks announced the signing of DeMarco

PAYSEUR: Do you feel like you’ve grown as a songwriter or as a person from Time to Strange Dreams?CALDER: A lot of that stuff off Strange Dreams I made right after Time. Half I made immediately after and then half I did more recently. PAYSEUR: Do you have a different vision or persona when you’re working on Mold Boy?
