Hans Christian Andersen (/ˈændərsən/; Danish: (listen); 2 April 1805 – 4 August 1875) was a Danish author. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children: his stories express themes that transcend age and nationality.

The Hans Christian Andersen Awards are two literary awards by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), recognising one living author and one living illustrator for their "lasting contribution to children's literature". The writing award was inaugurated in 1956, the illustration award in 1966. The former is sometimes called the "Nobel Prize for children's literature".

Hans Christian Andersen was also renowned for a different type of work that also involved paper. Andersen was a very popular paper cutter who would amuse his friends and their children with his paper cutting skills. Friends and acquaintances were all in awe of his skills in this area. He would often accompany his paper cutting with a fantastic tale, and end the tale by unfolding the paper to the amazed listeners. He frequently gave the paper cuts as gifts to his listeners. The Hans Christian Andersen Award is the highest international recognition given to an author and an illustrator of children's books. Given every other year by IBBY, the Hans Christian Andersen Awards recognize lifelong achievement and are presented to an author and an illustrator whose complete works have made an important, lasting contribution to children's literature. The Author's Award has been given since 1956 and the Illustrator's Award since 1966.
