Working wonders is a fitting title for Judy Mowatt's 1985 forth cd. Judy broke new ground in reggae with her "Black Woman" album been the first lady to write and produce her own songs. On this med 80's album Judy delivers the goods yet again, stand out tracks for me are "Black Man, Brown Man" "Let's Dance" "So Many Eyes", "Mother Africa" and the beautiful "Ethiopia Salaam". If you like Judy this is a must have, if your new to her work I would recommend starting with her "Black Woman" cd.
Judith Veronica Mowatt, OD (born 1952) is a Jamaican reggae artist. As well as being a solo artist, as from 1974 she was also a member of the I Three (wrongly spelled "I Threes"), trio of backing vocalists for Bob Marley & The Wailers after Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer left. Mowatt was born in Gordon Town, St. Andrew Parish, Jamaica. At the age of 13, she became a member of a dance troupe which toured Jamaica and other islands in the Caribbean. Her initial ambition was to become a registered nurse
Judy Mowatt: Working Wonders The positivity of reggae's most autonomous woman isn't rendered any more credible by her brightly idealistic delivery-sounds like she's leading the community sing at Camp Nyabinghi. Her genteel Rastafarianism partakes of the usual fundamentalist delusions-she ignores Babylonian propaganda about Ethiopia, and she's sufficiently protective of her wonder worker's masculinity to insist that unlike those other women she's "not up to any tricks"-without the saving grace of fundamentalist conviction.
