Harmonium – David Grubbs. Recorded By – Bundy K. Brown. Tenor Saxophone, Flute – Mats Gustafsson. Recorded 1/19/98 at Überstudio, Chicago. What David did with the harmonium for RICHARD BUCKNER's "Lucky Buzz" on 1998s "Since" he undoes here with Mats Gustafsson on "Apertuna. There is no melody here, nothing memorable to hold on to. Communication is of the cold drone of the e-tenor saxophone overlapping notes like perilous waves in the vast ocean.

In 1999 MATS GUSTAFSSON became a star in Chicago. The Swedish reed player's performances with various groups, including KEN VANDERMARK, FRED ANDERSON, KENT KESSLER, HAMID DRAKE, MICHAEL ZERANG, FRED LONBERG-HOLM, and numerous others-not to mention the newly minted PETER BROTZMANN TENTET-are already legendary. While contributing to David Grubb's "Thicket" (DC160) of last year, the pair became terminally sidetracked w/ recording the two lengthy duets for harmonium and saxophone, and harmonium and fluteophone that make up "Apertura"

ALT-ROCK fans who know David Grubbs from his solo albums' deft merging of singer-songwriter stylings and avant-garde aesthetics will be unable to reconcile Off-Road with the name above the title. That's because Grubbs seeks out the Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson whenever he wants to get seriously strange.
