24 countries participated in the Grand Final. The 2005 contest saw many previous participants return to the stage. Helena Paparizou, who represented Greece as part of the group Antique, returned to the contest with the song My Number One. Chiara, who finished third for Malta in 1998, returned to the contest as did Constantinos Christoforou who represented Cyprus in 1996 and in 2002 as part of the group One. Annabel Conde, who represented Spain in 1995 was a backing singer for Andorra and Selma who finished second for Iceland in 1999, failed to qualify from the Semi-Final with her song If I Had Your Love.

Ukraine was represented in the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 by GreenJolly with the song "Razom nas bahato". The members of GreenJolly are Roman Kostyuk, Roman Kalyn, and Andriy Pisetskyi. The band was created in 1997 and frequently played in Ivano-Frankivsk and other Ukrainian cities, and took part in various festivals. In 1998, they came second at "The Future of Ukraine' festival and second prize at 'The Melody' festival.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2005 was the 50th Eurovision Song Contest, which was held at the Palace of Sports, Kiev, Ukraine. The winner was Greece's My Number One, written by the famous songwriters Christos Dantis and Natalia Germanos and performed by Greek-Swedish singer Helena Paparizou, who scored 230 points, while Malta's Angel, Chiara, was the runner up with 192 points, and the third place went to Romania's Let Me Try. Moldova and Bulgaria made their debuts, while Hungary decided to withdraw.
