The Great Highland bagpipe (Scottish Gaelic: a' phìob mhòr pronounced lit. "the great pipe") is a type of bagpipe native to Scotland. It has acquired widespread recognition through its usage in the British military and in pipe bands throughout the world. A Canadian soldier plays the bagpipes during the War in Afghanistan. In recent years, often driven by revivals of native folk music and dance, many types of bagpipes have enjoyed a resurgence in popularity and, in many cases, instruments that were on the brink of obscurity have become extremely popular.
