Get Hurt is completely different than anything the Gaslight Anthem has ever done, a record that comes after frontman Brian Fallon's divorce, as well as a retreat from both substances and social media. With every bungled attempt at pop, metal, or pop-metal that the Gaslight Anthem make, Get Hurt just rewrites its own worst case scenario. Get Hurt is completely different than anything the Gaslight Anthem has ever done, a record that comes after frontman Brian Fallon's divorce, as well as a retreat from both substances and social media. Who says the Gaslight Anthem doesn’t have a sense of humor? You know, besides everyone who’s heard a single note of their music.

Get Hurt is probably the band’s worst album - which really isn’t saying that much given how strong their discography has been - but its failures are both spectacular and interesting. Take, for example, the opening track Stay Vicious. It’s a song that starts off with a merciless riff fueled by longing and grit. The title track is exactly the kind of song that you’d never expect The Gaslight Anthem to make. Its emotionally-charged chorus is amplified by incredibly foreign-sounding synths that almost feel as if they are crying out, and the band sounds as if they are aiming for arenas rather than seedy dive bars. 1000 Years isn’t too far off the mark from the traditional Gaslight sound, but its subtle and serpentine guitars and rousing chorus are anthemic to the point where it will surely become a live staple

On Get Hurt, the fifth studio album from the Garden State rockers, the band expand their influences to create what might be their most unique album to date. Exploring the rock sounds of the '70s, the band show off their versatility as they take listeners on a guided tour of the LP bins of the day. Opening with a droning riff culled straight from the annals of classic stoner rock, the first track, "Stay Vicious," makes it clear that something very different is happening here. Delicate tracks like "Underneath the Ground" reveal that the real essence of the Gaslight Anthem's sound isn't sonic so much as it is emotional. Get Hurt shows that so long as they're passionate about their music, it doesn't matter where the band are getting their inspiration from, because genuinely caring about something is always compelling.
