Though led and largely written by electric-bassist Tacuma, this is basically a new Ornette Coleman recording, and a pretty good one too. It's an octet studio session from last year, with Coleman playing alto alongside the UK's Tony Kofi on tenor, and Wolfgang Puschnig on flute. Unusually for Coleman, there's even a pianist, Yoichi Uzeki. Our journalists will try to respond by joining the threads when they can to create a true meeting of independent minds.

Jamaaladeen Tacuma (born Rudy McDaniel; June 11, 1956) is an American free jazz bassist born in Hempstead, New York. He was a bandleader on the Gramavision label and worked with Ornette Coleman during the 1970s and 1980s, mostly in Coleman's Prime Time band. Tacuma showcased a unique style of avant-garde jazz on Coleman's 1982 album Of Human Feelings, and became widely viewed as one of the most distinctive bassists since Jaco Pastorius.

Despite the 80-year-old Ornette Coleman's advice to the other players here ("Fellers, can you hear me? Forget the note and get to the idea"), much of this sprawling but unique session is more conventionally song-based than the great saxophonist's harmolodic breakthroughs of five decades ago. Initiated by bass guitarist and 1970s Coleman protege Jamaaladeen Tacuma, it brings together a remarkable bespoke band including British tenor saxist Tony Kofi, Carla Bley's versatile Austrian reeds-player Wolfgang Puschnig, Japanese pianist Yoichi Uzeki, teenage Philadelphia drumm.

Jamaaladeen Tacuma is the rare bass guitarist to have found a unique voice as a jazz musician. His style has been referred to as free funk, and that’s true as far as it goes: he plays with the hard groove of a funk player but is rarely confined to a single chord or a simple tonality. This track begins one of the recording’s two suites. Each part of For the Love of Ornette uses a different bass line to set up the groove and around which to build structure. East Wind flavors its lick with an eastern modality, while Drum and Space propels a bouncing bass lick (and, ultimately, thrilling horn improvisations) with tight funk drumming. Footworth Stomp uses a short loop of a groove bass line as an anchor for the free association of the horns in flowing improvisation. For Your Love, reissued on Merge, is a tour de force of grassroots rock and soul.
