Soprano Summit was one of the finest regularly working jazz bands in existence during the 1970s. With Bob Wilber and Kenny Davern (on clarinets and sopranos) inspiring each other, their music was consistently exciting. On this particular release acoustic guitarist Marty Grosz is a major asset while bassist George Duvivier and drummer Fred Stoll are fine in support of the lead voices. Four of the dozen songs performed for this album are Wilber originals and they all fit into the genre of small-group swing. Very enjoyable music.

Soprano Summit was one of the hottest mainstream bands of the 1970s, a potentially explosive unit co-starring Bob Wilber and Kenny Davern on sopranos and clarinets. Their repertoire included both classics from the 1920s and '30s, and newer originals in a freewheeling style, but there was no need for strict re-creations; the musicians simply played like themselves.

The Summit format is used in jazz to bring together performers on a particular musical instrument. Though these recording often feature other musicians (notably a rhythm section), the main instrument is focused upon in a celebratory way. The saxophone quartet has since become a somewhat common format, and to a lesser extent the bass clarinet quartet. Additionally, all-percussion ensembles and a cappella groups are common and focus upon a single instrument in a similar way.
