The song was first recorded by the French singer Roland Gerbeau in 1945. It was not until 1946 that Trenet recorded his own version. When it was released in 1946, it became an unexpected hit, and has remained a chanson classic and jazz standard ever since.

La Mer. This song is by Charles Trenet and appear. a merQu'on voit danser le long des golfes clairsA des reflets d'argentLa merDes reflets changeantsSous la pluie.

ASV/Living Era's collection of legendary French vocalist Charles Trenet 's original mono recordings from 1935-1950 shows an artist at the peak of his career. Featuring classics such as "La Mer" and "Marie, Marie," the golden throated Trenet proves himself a stylish performer, and an impeccable songwriter. Sadly missing from this anthology is the infectious "Boum," a charming tune about the heart that featured prominently in the 1991 comedy/drama Toto Le Hero

La mer. qu'on voit danser le long des golfes clairs. a des reflets d'argent, la mer, des reflets changeants. La mer. au ciel d'été confond. avec les anges si purs, la mer bergère d'azur. An étang is one of the large lagoons that line the Languedoc and Rousillon coast where Trenet was raised. This can be verified by a look at at a map of the area. Trenet apparently wrote this after a train journey. We recently took a train from Montpellier to Barcelona and back. The imagery of La Mer was all visible. Please change "ponds" to "lagoons.

Charles Trenet, Album. Other albums by Charles Trenet. Concert à la e en 1954 (Inédit). La Mer is an infectious, bubbly collection of Charles Trenet's work between 1938 and 1946 featuring such hits as the jaunty "La Mer," "Boum," and "Hop! Hop!" as well as the surging ballad "Que Reste-t-il de Nos Amours?. Trenet was an entertainer in the classic sense, his "Singing Fool" act a holdover from pre-World War II France. His music wasn't anything fancy. Normally, Trenet's expressive, mirthful scatting would appear backed by accordion, noodling clarinets, or muted trumpet.
