Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. First, the Buffalo Philh is a wonderful orchestra, strong in all departments and at ease in all manner of music. For Wagner a deep, rich sound is necessary with the overall sonic picture arising from the bottom of the orchestra. The low strings and brass are crystal clear in Tim Handley's engineering and the sonic picture allows us to hear EVERYTHING, especially if the listener has the audio components to extract all the sound on the disc.

The works are based loosely on characters from the Norse sagas and the Nibelungenlied. The composer termed the cycle a "Bühnenfestspiel" (stage festival play), structured in three days preceded by a Vorabend ("preliminary evening"). It is often referred to as the Ring Cycle, Wagner's Ring, or simply The Ring.

The essential meaning of Wagner’s magnum opus Der Ring des Nibelungen is wrapped up in the composer’s own lifetime pursuit of transcendent romance, with the redemption of eternal love one of the primary tenets of this and his other music dramas. Wagner’s gift for orchestral colour and scenic characterisation make his operas highly suited to the genre of the tone poem, and these seven tableaux evoke major scenarios in the saga, as well as providing a sense of the course and spirit of the greatest operatic drama ever written.
