The album introduces a variety of different shadings and approaches to the incipient Cocteaus sound, pointing the band towards the exultant, elegant beauty of later releases. Opening number "When Mama Was Moth" demonstrates the new musical range nicely; Fraser's singing is much more upfront, while Guthrie creates a bewitching mix of dark guitar notes and sparkling keyboard tones, with percussion echoing in the background.

Head over Heels is the second studio album by influential Scottish rock band Cocteau Twins. The album was released in October 1983 by 4AD, and was their first album as a duo of Elizabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie Contents.

About Head Over Heels. The second studio album by the influential Scottish ethereal wave band was named one of the most eccentric British albums of all time by Mojo magazine in 2003. The album shows a more varied sound than on Garlands and hints at the greatness the band would achieve on later releases. Head Over Heels Q&A. More Cocteau Twins albums. Cocteau Twins' sound on their first three recordings relied on the combination of Heggie's rhythmic basslines, Guthrie's minimalist guitar melodies, and Fraser's voice. The band's next full-length LP record, Head over Heels, relied solely on the latter two, following Heggie's amicable departure after the tour that followed the release of Peppermint Pig (he would later join Lowlife). This led to the growth of the characteristic Cocteau Twins sound: Fraser's voice, by turns ethereal and operatic, combined with increasingly effects-heavy guitar

Enter Head Over Heels, the answer to the critics who labeled Cocteau Twins as a poseur post-punk band. The song "When Mama Was Moth" is kind of a misnomer opening for "Head Over Heels", it has the groundbreaking ethereal wave sound that bands such as Lycia or Dead Can Dance would utilize in their most iconic albums, yet it possesses the Garlands era sound. Even though the album seems to be more optimistic by nature, there is still a gothic and post-punk presence on the album. These songs would be: When Mama Was Moth, In Our Angelhood, Glass Candle Grenades, The Tinderbox (Of The Heart), and Musette and Drums ; the sound is similar to early Siouxsie and The Banshees, especially with the song Glass Candle Grenades ; yet the songs on Head Over Heels avoid the monotonous nature that plagued Garlands by adding some sort of new sound or song.
